3D printer creates F1 speedster

15 March 2012
Just 4 times the width of a human hair!

The speedster, four times the width of a human hair, was developed by a team of researchers at the Vienna University of Technology using a new 3D printing technique.

The technology is capable of building nanoscale structures at a speed of five metres a second which, it is claimed, is a new world record for this type of printing.

To create objects, the device uses a liquid resin which hardens at the correct spots by a focused laser beam. The laser is guided throughout the process by a series of movable mirrors. The new technique can be used to create sculptures as tiny as a grain of sand.

"Until now, this technique used to be quite slow," said Professor Jürgen Stampfl from the Institute of Materials Science and Technology.

"The printing speed used to be measured in millimetres per second – our device can do five meters in one second."

Whatever will they think of next...
