BlackBerry-maker RIM releases PlayBook upgrade (finally)

22 February 2012

About time too – it's nearly a year after RIM originally planned to launch it.

Nevertheless - Playbook OS 2.0, available as a free upgrade, adds a built-in, all-encompassing email function to the device which we reckon will be pretty useful.

RIM had originally said the upgrade would go out a few months after the PlayBook's initial release in April last year.

But no matter eh – it's here now. The PlayBook update also incorporates a built-in calendar and contacts function, as well as better integration with social networks like Facebook and Twitter.

There's also a nifty new add-on – called Blackberry Bridge – that allows you to 'remote control' the tablet using a BlackBerry phone via Bluetooth connection.

The aforementioned email client does look pretty decent – it allows you to group together messages from your social platforms (Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn), as well as your personal and work email accounts – so you've got them all in one handy place.

Which could either be a help or a hindrance, we suppose!

RIM senior vice president David J Smith said: "Building on the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet's proven web browsing, multimedia and multitasking strengths, the new BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 introduces a range of new communications and productivity enhancements as well as expanded app and content support."
