Could Facebook be toppled off its perch?

21 February 2012

Research by YouGov's Media Consulting team found almost two thirds (65 per cent) of the UK online population have used Facebook in the last month.

The social media giant is most popular, unsurprisingly, amongst younger people – practically ubiquitous, in fact.   A whopping 95 per cent of 16 to 20 year-olds, and 74 per cent of 21 to 24 year-olds, accessed the website in the last month.

But it is not all sweetness and light for Mark Zuckerberg's social media behemoth.

The YouGov study, of more than 1,000 social media users, found 23 per cent of Britons who actively use Facebook said they used the website less than they did a year ago.

What's more, 19 per cent think they will use Facebook less in a year's time.

So what social platforms could overtake Facebook? According to YouGov, social media users are increasingly looking for platforms that give them added value.

Interestingly, consumer finance advice website moneysavingexpert.com now has as many active users as Twitter.

And Spotify, primarily a music service, has recently added social media functions. One in ten Spotify users now spends more than 14 hours a week using the service.

And then there's LinkedIn. More than half of the website's online British online population say they use it more than they did a year ago. And 30 per cent expect to use it more in 12 months' time.

Time, as ever, will tell...
