HP issues alert over laserjet bug

In an email, reported by PCMag, HP said the vulnerability could allow hackers unauthorised access to 50 printer lines, including the LaserJet Pro 100 colour MFP M175 and LaserJet Pro 300 colour M351.

The company, which is currently planning to merge its printer and PC divisions, said as far as it was aware no printers had been affected by the problem.

However, on its tech support page the firm posted a full list of affected products as well as guidance for troubleshooting the issue.

"A potential security vulnerability has been identified with certain HP printers and HP digital senders. The vulnerability could be exploited remotely to install unauthorised printer firmware," HP said.

To resolve the issue, the printer manufacturer recommends disabling an affected printer's remote firmware update capability.

However, a number of the machines could need a firmware update in order for this to be possible, HP said.
