In an article for isnare.com, Clair O'Hara writes that by buying remanufactured or refilled ink or toner cartridges, consumers are both doing their bit for the environment and saving a bit of money, too.
Cartridges from third-party suppliers are, on average, 30 per cent cheaper than those from big-name suppliers, she said. She claims that in the UK more than 45 million non-biodegradable printer cartridges end up going to landfill every year – now that's an awful lot of wasted cartridge.
"Buying third-party cartridges is a win-win situation, for you, and for the environment," Ms O'Hara wrote.
A common criticism of remanufactured cartridges is that they are inferior to original ones. Not so, the writer says.
Independent research has shown that the print quality of remanufactured and refilled cartridges is as good as, if not superior, to genuine cartridges. "Many third-party cartridge suppliers are trusted brands who have been in the industry for over a decade so they have the expertise to compete with the quality of brand name cartridges," Ms O'Hara said.
